Tips for Finding Student Accommodation - Yourgaff

Viewing season starts very early and is already upon us just a month after university began. Things can be very overwhelming, especially when you have to choose who you want to live with, in a year’s time, for a whole year - and you’ve only known these people a couple of weeks! The members of the Yourgaff team are all University of Chester alumni, so we’ve been in your shoes before…that‘s why we’re in the best position to advise you on finding your student accommodation for the 2024/2025 academic year.

Set a Budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend on accommodation each month or term. You want to be able to afford to pay your rent without missing out on the amazing social aspects that university has to offer. Be sure to consider food shops, social events, utilities (are all bills included in the rent?) and other living expenses.

Location Matters: Think about the location of your accommodation. Consider factors like proximity to your university campus, public transport and local amenities like supermarkets and restaurants.

Housemates/Flatmates: Living in a houseshare with your friends can be super fun whilst significantly reducing the costs of living-in at university. Think about WHO you want to live with as well as how many people you want to live with. Are you the kind of person who would enjoy a large house with 8 of your friends or would you prefer something smaller with just a handful of mates? Either way, be sure to find housemates who share your lifestyle and study habits.

Book in a Viewing: If possible, visit the accommodation in person before committing. Photos can be deceiving, and it's essential to get a feel for the place and ensure it’s the right home for you. Once you have determined whether you are an individual or part of a group, book in for a viewing and ensure all members of your party can attend.

Read the Contract Carefully: Before signing a tenancy agreement, carefully read through all the terms and conditions. Ensure you understand the rent, any deposits, and any rules or restrictions. Make sure you ask any important questions before signing on the dotted line…once it’s signed, you are legally bound by the terms of that contract!

Remember that finding the right accommodation can significantly impact your student experience. Take your time, do thorough research, and don't rush into decisions. By following these tips, you can make your student housing search smoother and more successful. Good luck, and don’t forget to check out our available properties!
