World Vegan Day - Plant-based Chester

We’re on a mission to find vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Chester…and boy have we found some beauties! A plant-based diet has so many benefits, from lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing our carbon footprint, to protecting animals from exploitation. It is a common misconception that plant based food is boring, bland and lacks taste and flavour - this could not be further from the truth! Check out some of the insane vegan and veggie eateries Chester has to offer from our recommendations below, and let the food do the talking…

Shrub

(1-3 Eastgate Row, Chester)

Shrub is a plant-based bar and eatery specialising in vegn small plates and cocktails. The venue serves as the perfect location for a date night or to celebrate a special occasion. My colleague Emma has been a big lover of Shrub since it opened and she’s been desperate to get me there - I can’t believe what I’ve been missing! We ordered the pumpkin tortellini, Szechuan fries, artichoke wings, beer battered spring onions and vegetable gyozas. Small plates are one of my favourite ways to enjoy food as you can try and taste so many different things! The food was all so flavoursome and beautifully presented…we will definitely be returning!

Vegan House

(Chester Market, Exchange Square, Northgate St, Chester)

Tucked away at the back of the New Chester Market, you’ll find Vegan House a.k.a the winner of the ‘Best takeaway in the North West‘ award. Vegan House promises to deliver delicious yet nutritious plant-based ‘junk food’… and that it did! I went for the dirty ‘doner’ fries whilst Emma took advantage of their lunchtime deal, a hotdog , frise and a drink for just £10! Em is a freuquent meat-alternative eater and she LOVED the vegan hotdog. They also smashed both the flavours and textures of the vegan ‘doner’ meat! Affordable, tasty and 100% plant-based - what’s not to love?

Fika+

(2 City Walls, Chester)

Fika, pronounced (fee-ka) means ‘a moment to slow down and appreciate the amazing things in life; coffee with friends’ - this couldn’t be more fitting. We visited Fika on a chilly, wet autumnal morning. Nestled into the city walls, it’s cosy vibes made for the perfect setting to enjoy an oat milk vanilla latte and a mid-morning breakfast. We opted for both  sweet and savoury fixes with the banana and cocoa peanut butter on toast and the cheeze and kimchi toasted sandwich.

In addition to the above, we also have Pink Lettuce and Jaunty Goat on our list. We haven’t had the chance to try them just yet, but both have been highly recommended! If you’ve been, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
